I think autumn might be the best season for a first date. It's not too hot, not too cold, and a walk takes the pressure off. You're side by side rather than staring across a table, there's always something to point at, and it's easy to wrap things up or stretch them out depending on how it's going.
Why a walk works
Conversation flows more easily when you're moving. If there's a quiet moment, you can look at the trees or the water instead of feeling you have to fill the silence. A walk also has a natural shape: set off, have a wander, finish with a hot drink. Nobody has to commit to a long evening.
Walks in the city
- The Canal Basin. A gentle stroll beside the water, with old warehouses and narrowboats to look at. Easy underfoot and close to the city centre.
- The War Memorial Park. Wide paths, big trees and plenty of benches. It's a good choice if you'd like the option of a short loop or a longer one.
- Around the cathedral ruins. A thoughtful, quiet place to wander, with plenty to talk about. Check opening times if you'd like to go inside the new cathedral.
A little further out
- Coombe Country Park. Lakes, woodland and open lawns just outside the city, and lovely when the leaves are turning. Check the opening times and any parking charges first.
- Kenilworth Abbey Fields. An easy wander with the castle ruins nearby, plus cafés in the town for afterwards.
- Draycote Water. A path runs right round the reservoir, but it's a big loop. For a first date, a short stretch and a coffee is plenty.
- Jephson Gardens in Leamington. A pretty spot for a stroll, with lots of places to sit down afterwards.
Autumn tips
- Mind the light. The evenings draw in fast and the clocks change at the end of October, so a morning or early afternoon walk is easiest.
- Check the forecast. Have a plan B, like a café or a museum, in case the rain arrives.
- Wear sensible shoes. Paths get muddy and leaves can be slippery.
- Keep it short. An hour is plenty. If it goes well, you'll have a good reason for a second date.
- Think about travel. Make your own way there and back, so you both feel comfortable.
Finish with something warm
A hot drink at the end gives you a reason to sit down and carry on talking, or a polite moment to say goodbye. Choose somewhere nearby before you set off, and you won't be wandering around hungry and undecided.
